The Old Oilhouse is a Transformers podcast (or as they put it, transformers as a gateway drug podcast) that deals mostly with the community surrounding the franchise, and having what sounds like a great time. Recently I’ve seen people commenting on the forums that have no real interest in transformers, but love other 80′s memories.
What they put out each month is a weekly round-up show, roundtables on almost any subject, a fantastic bit of fun called Iacon 101 and many more.
If you want to have a chuckle, or fondly remember the 80′s, I can’t recommend Adam, Rob and Stu enough.

I agree with this review. Hands down, it’s a trip down memory lane of the 80′s. Very well produced. Good job guys.

Oh, and by the way, if you have an iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, or even WebOS, check out Stitcher. It is a great way of listening to your podcasts and audio shows. I love it so much, I’ve been listening to some of my favorite podcasts on it, including This American Life, This Week in Tech, and Radiolab.

I always check out the latest psychology podcasts, with an interest in social dynamics and applied psychology its hard to find some good stuff out there without ending up at some ‘dating podcast’ or NLP101 type thing where they spend an episode spouting at how good they are, perhaps give away one tiny tip then state if you want more organise some highly expensive coaching…
Then I found ‘The Alpha Dude Podcast’ by Michael Pulser, and I was sceptical at first given the name but when I got into it – its quite addictive and I got a lot out of it – from learning psychological warfare, social dynamics, heaps of cool psychology things and then how to be a human lie detector (a segment that goes through it step by step at the end of each show.) This would be the single best podcast I have heard where I got a lot out of it and enjoyed it.
The only con is the production – it is not professional – but that seems to be part of the charm – its not commercial, not selling anything and the podcaster is happy to chat to people without charging or pushing something. This is the first review of a podcast I have done, the main reason I did it is that he has helped me, thought I’d pay it forward. Check it out!

Happy to hear of independent podcasters who will make quality content without caring so much about the production value (which can be somewhat of a hype at times). My issue is that the website doesn’t seem to find the audio file, so you may have to go to their iTunes link instead. Also, this podcast hasn’t updated in over a year, so beware that there may not be any new episodes anymore.

Talk Stew is a weekly podcast that I’ve been listening to for a while and it hasn’t failed to deliver in the laugh department or the entertainment department. Stew, KO and Mark the Pickleman have good chemistry and a good time as they cover their regular segments: WTF, Tip of the Week, Something Good in Your Mouth, A-hole of the Week, amongst others. Interspersed with the segments are current events , some celebrity chat, tales from Stew and KO’s Marine Corps days and general chat all brought to you in an irreverent but knowledgeable style.
I highly recommend you check it out. The more you listen and get to know the guys on the show, the better it gets.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the best podcast personal companion to help me get through the insufferable two hour commute I make every day to work and home. I got tired of the angry guys, the bigoted guys and the sarcastic guys, then quite by accident I found Stack of Dimes and I was ‘converted’. They’re funny, a little self-deprecating and a LOT of fun. I’m on a campaign to get their facebook subscribers up to 500 (it’s at about 300 now) because they’ve committed to all of us that once they reach 500 they’re going to release a really cheesy video they made when they were in high school. I love this podcast and now I am a “man on a mission”. Give them a listen.

Brian Bondragazon writes, “I’ve recently found a podcast I love, and thought you might want to check it out…. it’s called ‘Reel Pour’ and I found it on itunes. What they do is go and see a movie in theaters every week and then pair a bottle of wine with it based on a couple of different factors. Then they open the bottle and taste it on air describing what they taste (which is really interesting by itself), and discuss both the movie and the wine, then review both. It’s really interesting and I’m even learning about wine with them being condescending. You can really feel their passions for both wine and movies. I’m also a fan of Filmspotting, Creative Screen writing magazine podcast, the classic tales podcast, the moth podcast and a bunch of others.”

Metal Rules Radio interviews musicians/personalities in the metal music community, reviews song submissions from up and coming artists, and has fun discussing a variety of topics every show. Also, I’m opening up a page to share podcasts you love and do some regular segment on this, so that way there’s a wider range of podcasts to go through.

What really draws me into this show is that it’s relate able. The hosts are funny and witty in their own way, but it also reminds me of my family’s traditions according to food and the junk food I used to eat as a kid. It’s true to itself and makes others reminisce.

The show is updated weekly, or so, and can be found on iTunes or their website.

Spilled Milk

You can discover music too, every day. I’ve learned about Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer, Phoenix, and many others from this podcast, and I haven’t been greatly disappointed. But with every music aficionado, I don’t like everything I hear. There are some artists I’ve never heard of that I don’t like too much, but KEXP usually hits my tastes more than 90% of the time.

The podcast is daily from Monday to Friday, and the list of upcoming artists is listed on their blog. You can subscribe with iTunes or any other “podcatcher” program.

If you want to learn how to cook and want to learn from viewing videos, I definitely suggest Food Wishes just because it is well produced, it has excellent audio quality, not like some YouTube videos out there who don’t use a proper mic. But if you’re not into cooking, Food Wishes also runs tutorials that teach one to properly eat, like the this video below that shows how to eat chicken wings.

The Problem with Podcasting

The iTunes set-up for podcasting is not ideal for finding new shows to listen to. Also, iTunes has been inundated by the video podcasts versus the audio podcasts, and as an avid fan of audio, I think that podcast listeners, and new listeners, have quite a dilemma. First, the platforms in which podcasts are delivered aren’t widely available. And for other programs that download podcasts, for example MediaMonkey, it’s quite impossible to find podcasts unless you know which shows you want to listen to. You can read blogs like mine, other others, but again, there’s only one dominate platform. What we need, perhaps, is a media guide, like the TV guide listing channel on a cable network.

Another thing is that I love a well-produced podcast over a podcast with horrible quality; our ears tend to pick up quality a lot better than our eyes (YouTube videos, as great high quality has been, still streams many low quality videos). Though set-up may be cheap to set-up at home, podcasters can not allow a raw and unedited podcast to go on the air, there needs to be edits and cuts. There are guides out there that can help podcasters better their podcasts, like Podcast Alley. But maybe this comes from a predisposition from listening to radio for more than a decade of my life.

Last, but not least, is the availability. We can all download podcasts from iTunes, but we want our shows on our TVs, Car radios, or everywhere we go. Personally, I bring my iPod everywhere, but what if we could listen to our shows with hassle of connecting devices back and forth. To that, and all of the other issues, I’m merely addressing an issue, and not actually providing a solution. I don’t have a solution to give, though I have ideas that may or may not work.

New Media’s Shift to ‘Media’

Perhaps what shocks me the most, or at least startles me, is the shift of new media. There isn’t a stable model for videos online to profit. However, the Roku box and Mediafly are about to bring programming online to the television. The idea isn’t new of course; there have been models with the Xbox, the PS3, or home brewing your own media center. For video producers, video podcasters, or even audio podcasters, there is a shift that could bring a larger market to your shows. Viewing content on your television is much more comforting than watching everything from your computer screen. That’s why this “new media” could very well move and integrate to form “media” in general.

But this certainly brings a concern, especially for international viewers and listeners. The U.S. isn’t the only consumer of media, there’s Europeans and Asians who also take in media, not to mention Southern Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, and so on. If we’re going to shift podcasting/vlogging/and so on, we have to include the whole world.

Imagine that instead of having your computer on in the morning to read the New York Times, you’ll have it on demand on your television. Of course, a small community has already done so, but the masses will start to look into this. And when they do, we can expect a refined model of advertising, of content production, and of making money.

Concluding Thoughts

I’ve just finished reading “Crush It,” by Gary Vaynerchuck, and it’s certainly a book to reel in people who have not been exposed to the ideas of social media and collaboration on the Internet. I recommend it for content producers especially as he really pushes them to create their own brand. For all of the content producers out there, try to outreach to other communities and grab people interested in what you say. Check out Boxee or MediaFly or other partnerships to see if you can bring your media to the television, or to the car radio. It’s your chance to make a living doing what you love. As for myself, I’m still determining what is ahead for podcasting, and I’ll continue writing reviews. Hopefully this week, I can pull five reviews out, and for the rest of the month. That’s my goal at least.

Climate change affects everyone in the world. One nature program I love that sometimes brings up this issue is TERRA, which I reviewed earlier this year. Go to the link and check out my review. I care deeply about global pollution and toxins going into our atmosphere. This week, This Week in Science talked about CO2 levels today being just as high as today nearly 15 million years ago. Maybe there’s a correlation somewhere.

Mighty Movie Podcast

Dan is a great interviewer who you can really lean back and listen to. The format is typical, where Dan first teases the film, gives us part of the trailer, and then commences with the interview. There are some audio problems here and there, but nothing that can’t be fixed in future episodes. With a little polishing here or there, future interviews with directors, writers, and filmmakers will allow the audience to really let the podcast grow. What I would like to see is some audience participation in asking questions, perhaps. It would be nice to have some twitter feed, or other platform, in which we know upcoming interviews he may have and questions we could ask for ourselves. Other than that, Mighty Movie Podcast really gives independent films some press as I just recently found the movie “We Live in Public” and want to go see it badly. So after this review, I’m going to download that episode where Dan interviews Ondi Timoner, the director of that film.

The first thing this reminded me was the political candidate interviews in the dorm room hosted by James Kotecki. If you are unfamiliar with this reference, watch the video below. It’s of an interview with James and Ron Paul back in 2007 talking about his run for president.

If you are unfamiliar with Robert (Bobby) Llewellyn, he is a English actor “best known for his roles as presenter of Scrapheap Challenge, and as the android Kryten in the hit sitcom Red Dwarf.” (Source: Wikipedia) With his background in mainstream media, he uses the online services and video sharing sites to create a show of his own with a very unique way of presenting interviews. Not only does this show have a different feel, but the website he has is absolutely amazing, utilizing old Windows/Mac OS designs.

Also, I’m updating the previously reviewed page and adding a new page for topics I have reviewed on though I’m thinking of scraping the numerical list. Also, I want to know if people want discus comment system rather than the one I have now. I’d much rather have a threaded conversation than the comment system I have now. It would be great. I’m also going to be updating old reviews and trying my best to give you all reviews five days a week, though I’m going to have scheduling issues this month as I am moving. In October, everything should be good and I will try to fix up this site as well as bring on either a new design or fixing up the old way of doing things, including the list system.

Before I forget, I will be making more frequent updates on my twitter page as soon as I fix Tweet Deck, which won’t update for some reason. Thank you all for the recommendations. I really do appreciate it.

The show is quite random, so you don’t really know what to expect on next week’s show. They’ll sometimes get very political, like their recent episode about Sarah Palin’s resignation, or talk about different types of soda. But nevertheless, the show is both intriguing and provocative as both of them have a different perspective to bring to the floor.

East Meets West explains two viewpoints from east, where Tom grew up in, and West, where Roger grew up in, hence the name of the show. With this combination, you get a more interesting set-up for these two hosts as they explore the random topics they conceive. The show is not too long, with most of them around thirty minutes, which is perfect for commute or listening while shopping. It’s the perfect podcast for those who both want something interesting to listen to besides the boring news, or if your interested in television shows, soda, etc. So lay bay, or go shopping, and listen to East Meets West, which updates every week.

The place where this podcast would really help you is for common knowledge where there are no doctors around, perhaps on a hiking trip, or when your shopping for medicine. So give it a listen and look for new episodes every week.
