This Week in Virology

May 4, 2009

Swine Flu is the big topic the past two weeks, so I thought it might be important for people to listen to This Week in Virology, and to remember the two words on the back cover of the Hitch hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: don’t panic. There are two hosts, “Vincent Racaniello, Ph.D. (aka profvrr) is Professor of Microbiology at Columbia University Medical Center,” and “Dickson D. Despommier, Ph.D. is Professor of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences and Microbiology at Columbia University Medical Center.” The show is very informative and very up-to-date. When there isn’t a swine flu going around, the two professors, along with other guests, talk about other viruses, for example SARS.

If you enjoy being scientific and very interested in viruses, there’s no better show than this. These professors understand viruses and know the history of it. Don’t understand why swine flu is called H1N1? Want to know more about the 1970s outbreak of swine flu? Don’t care about swine flu, but want to know more about other types of viruses? (I definately do.) Please give this podcast a listen because you’ll understand than panic like everybody else on CNN. (No offense to their news channel, but it seems necessary.)
