I have just found out that I am a joint beneficiary of an annuity so I would like to ask a tax question about settlement options.

I have a small retirement income. I live abroad and file seperately because my husband is not American. This year I was not required to pay US taxes, but I am afraid to take the annuity money in one lump sum as I might have trouble paying a large tax bill.

Should I choose to take the payments over several years? Does it make a difference to the taxes I must pay?

I appreciate the oppertunity of asking a simple question about taxes to an expert without paying a large consultation fee.
